JACK MORRIS - EXPIRY

Burlington, VT - Frog Hollow is thrilled to present “Expiry,” a solo exhibition by Stowe, VT native Jack Morris, starting April 1st. This evocative show uses a unique mosaic narrative approach, weaving a story through photographs created with expired film.

We often view photographs as an unfiltered window into the past, an accurate reflection of reality shaped by the photographer’s eye. However, Morris challenges this perception using antique cameras and new and expired film. The unpredictability of this medium becomes a collaborator in his creative process. Morris embraces the dichotomy between photography’s ability to portray the world accurately, and the uncertainty of his analog approach. Without screens, live feedback, or guarantees of results. Every variable is determined by Morris, and any oversight means a moment not captured. “It’s the act of creating an image rather than simply getting an image.”

“Expiry” showcases Morris’ keen eye for captivating moments, the life existing within them, and the stories they can portray. The fragmented nature of the expired film adds a layer of intrigue, inviting viewers to piece together the narrative and contemplate the beauty of life and the impermanent.

ARTIST DEMONSTRATION -ETHAN QUILLEN

Join us on Saturday, September 30th, for an artist demonstration featuring Ethan Quillen!

Having never thought of himself as “artistic,” Ethan Quillen committed his talents instead to academic pursuits, earning a few Master’s degrees, an MBA, and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. And then, like so many others seeking solace during Covid isolation, he too found himself captivated by potters making pots, online, as well as on a certain British-based pottery-themed competition show. So, in January 2022, after his wife dragged him to an intro to wheel-throwing class to “try it for ourselves,” it isn’t all that surprising that he quickly became obsessed with all things clay. He soon after quit his silly marketing job and began exploring the world of ceramic arts full-time. His pots are inspired by nature, and the beautiful harmony that can be found in contrasting textures, colors, and shapes.

Emergence (Coming to Light) Opening Reception

Please join us on Saturday, September 2nd, at 4pm for the Emergence Opening Reception!

Burlington, VT - Frog Hollow’s upcoming show Emergence (Coming to Light), a series of new monotypes by Carol MacDonald, transports the viewer to an altered world where the familiar is turned slightly upside down. Created in the aftermath of the pandemic the pieces interact with each other to exemplify the multifaceted nature of this abstract dreamscape and the struggle to understand a modified world. The finished works demonstrate an amalgamation of additive and subtractive processes. The ghost of a vibrant form in one piece appears in a fainter capacity in another. Another work features stitches sewn into the final print. The body of work interacts with itself to show the viewer an almost recognizable image that then disappears behind a veil of other information. The show will run through the month of September.

Artist Demonstration - Gretchen Verplanck

Join us on Saturday, September 2nd, for an artist demonstration featuring Gretchen Verplanck!

Gretchen grew up in Wickford, Rhode Island. Like many creative people she struggled through boredom in school, the only thing that kept her interested was art class. She moved to Vermont in 1988 to go to Goddard College, where she met her husband and was introduced to clay for the first time. Gretchen continued her art studies at Goddard but decided to transfer to Alfred University (New York College of Ceramics) to concentrate on ceramic sculpture and got her BFA there in 1993. She then moved back to Vermont and shared studio space with a couple potters for a couple years but couldn’t make much headway in supporting herself through her art. For the next 20 years, Gretchen worked for a graphic and web design firm, opened a catering company and an Interior design business. These were the jobs that kept her creative spirit alive while also allowing time and space to raise a family. In 2020 when her kids were on their way to adulthood, Gretchen made the decision to get back to ceramics full time.

Gretchen’s current work is still playing with the sculptural but with an eye towards utility. She has also become enamored with large scale tile pieces and how shapes and textures can be used to create a depth of space and touch. All of her work is made in her home studio out of white stoneware. She uses a slab roller to roll out slabs of clay and then manipulates the clay into shapes. Sometimes there are sgraffito designs after covering sections in underglaze, or carved sgraffito designs with rubbed in colored glaze after the firing. Some current work uses commercially made underglaze transfers and she intends to start delving into making her own. Gretchen has always been enamored of gold luster on ceramic objects, so this technique is used to decorate her pieces. Gretchen’s hope is that people find her work intriguing and a little off the beaten path.

Aaron draws inspiration from the Surrealist and Dada movements, most especially Joseph Cornell.  He is compelled to produce his work and creates a very personal view using common objects.  Scavenging materials, drawing, photography, painting, sculpting, wood & metal working, buying, collecting and wrecking toys are all part of his non-traditional creative process.

FAMILY FICTION - NEW OIL PAINTINGS BY DUG NAP

Burlington Vermont - Beginning June 29th Frog Hollow Craft Association and Gallery will exhibit “Family Fiction” New Oil paintings by dug Nap. The show captures images of Nap’s imaginary family.

In his new show Family Fiction dug Nap employs his longtime love of storytelling to explore the family model and a desire for a family of his own. Including “a couple of supportive parents, and lots of fun, interesting siblings to hang around with and bother, who would also bother me sometimes if I’m lucky”. In Family Fiction we meet the Radcliffs: the loving mother and psychologist, Angelina (nicknamed Angel because she’s so loving), her smart, artistic husband, Clifford, and their fun, talented children. A staple of the Vermont art scene dug is most recognized for his prints and digital art but chose oil paint as the medium for this project saying, “Oil paint offers a depth of experience for the viewer via its suspension of pigment in the oil, allowing for a radiance that provides a 3 dimensional immersion for the viewer almost as if they’re in theatrical set”.

WILD LITTLE PLACES

Beginning June 3rd, Frog Hollow Craft Association and Gallery will exhibit “Wild Little Places,” a show featuring new work by Gallery Member Carrie Ade. The work is an accumulation of the artist’s own observations in nature with an emphasis on detailed excerpts of the landscape, centering on native flora and fauna found throughout Vermont State and greater New England.

Through an intricate and stylized approach, Carrie uses a vibrant acrylic palette to build a perspective that is not an attempt at realism, by the artist, but an effort to show the infinite shapes and combinations of pattern and color one might observe in these wild or overgrown natural spaces.

The detail in Carrie’s work is an invitation for you to give each piece time, encouraging you to notice more than you initially might in these thoughtful depictions of nature and the landscape
