WOOD Gary Starr

Wooden Birds and Decoys

Starr, Gary - Picture.jpg

Gary was introduced to wood carving by his father, Dr. George Ross Starr, a carver and collector of over 2,000 decoys since 1948. As Gary spends his days at work on various fish and birds, he often thinks of his father. "It is a connection with my family," he says.

Gary does all the design, carving and painting on each of his pieces. He studies photographs of his subjects, and observes them in the wild. He’s even been known to hang around the supermarket, hoping for a castaway fish head to study. All of Gary’s work is carved from native Vermont basswood, some of it from nearby Snake Mountain. http://www.starrdecoys.com
