Jim Westphalen

"There’s a certain mystique that draws me to the Vermont landscape. A character built
on the farms and barns that have dotted the landscape for over 200 hundred years. A
character that speaks of a people who worked long hard days in a much simpler
time. There’s a timeless beauty to it all; the way in which these aging structures now
rest quietly in harmony with the natural beauty that surrounds them. The comfort of
knowing that many of them are still being used by second, third or even fourth gen-
eration Vermonters. It is this that beckons me to capture its essence. "

Jim Westphalen has been a successful photographer for over 25 years. His work is widely published both nationally and abroad in such publications as Country Home, Vermont Life and Better Homes and Garden's Country Gardens magazines. You can also see a broader view of Vermont in Jim'slatest book, Vermont Impressions (Far Country Press).
Jim left his New York studio in 1996 to fulfill a lifelong dream of liv- ing and working in Vermont. When he is not out shooting on commercial assignment, he spends much of his time roaming the back roads of Vermont, looking for scenes that recall a time long past or ones that simply manifest the beauty of the states many faces.
Inspired by such painters as Frederick Church and A. Hale Johnson, Jim strives to create imagery in which the quality of light, weather and time of day evoke depth, texture and a very real sense of place.
