WOOD John Filan and Meg Miller
Woodworking
John was born and
raised in Middlebury. While studying
geology at Middlebury College, he decided to pursue an interest in
carpentry. In 1971 John became one of
the first resident artists at the newly conceived Frog Hollow Craft Center. Over the next few decades John rounded out his woodworking career with
extensive experience in home building, cabinet and furniture making, and
architectural restoration.
Meg, too, grew up
in Middlebury. She went on to study art
at the Hartford Art School in Connecticut and at Alfred University in upstate New York. While living in Hartford, Meg trained as a florist and
horticulturalist. After half a decade of
city life, she returned to the countryside of Vermont.
Both longtime
residents, it is a wonder that John and Meg did not cross paths until she moved
back to the area in 1997. They soon
realized that they shared many common interests and have been together ever
since.
John and Meg
reside, with their three helpful cats, in the beautiful town of Weybridge, just to the west of downtown Middlebury. In addition to making unique, hand-crafted
serving boards and rolling pins, the couple also makes custom cabinetry and
furniture.
Seasonally, Meg and
John operate Shooting Star Flowers, growing fresh, unique cut flowers for local
wholesale venues and farmers’ market as well as offering custom flower
arranging services for weddings and events.
In the fall of
2005, John and Meg began construction of their new home studio and
gallery. Working together, from home, affords
them the time and flexibility to pursue the passions which brought them
together in the first place; gardening, hiking, science, nature, art, and above
all, cooking and sharing good meals with family and friends.
