Pottery
“I make wheel thrown stoneware and porcelain pottery ~ quintessentially utilitarian pots such as bowls, plates, casseroles, and mugs, to more atypical pieces such as adventurously large vase forms and ceramic drums. The glazes I use are based on oriental type glazes such as celadon, chun, temoku and shino. I take great pleasure in developing my glaze palette through performing series of experiments varying the materials used in glazes. There is a nearly never ending variety attainable through a thorough understanding of the ways in which glaze materials interact. I use iron almost exclusively as a colorant in my glazes. I am consistently pleased by the huge range of colors this one material can produce, from black to sky blue and from bright red to deep green. I apply my glazes to achieve subtle contrast. I brush and trail layers of glazes loosely to achieve patterns of subtle yet vigorous movement appropriate to the shape of the pot.
