FIBER ART Ellen Spring

Hand Painted Silk Wearables

Spring1.jpg

During all the years I studied art I never encountered surface design or fiber, yet somehow I was prepared to fall head over heels for silk painting when I came across it. The sensuous surface of burnished clay, the mystery of the vessel form, the translucent beauty of saturated color and the appeal of art that lived in the world, it was all there. Silk is at once drapeable and airy, delicate and durable. It takes dye beautifully and adds iridescence to any hue. It can be sewn to fit any form. The first time I brushed a stroke of dye across a shimmering field of white silk I knew I was in the right place. Now the vessel is the garment and it contains the human form and both are changed in the process.

Ceremonial garments are a cultural expression of spirituality. My wearable pieces are created with this in mind. Their rich colors and lively designs evoke celebration. Celebrations give us the opportunity to experience a sense of otherness. They give us pause and in that moment perhaps we take a deep breath, finding life more vibrant. My desire is to create garments that embody a bit of that magic and help keep it in our lives
