FINE ART Deborah Holmes

Watercolor Painting

“I work on several paintings at once; they are based on things I have seen, remember or have photographed. Often the finished painting looks nothing like the recording photograph - it’s more of a “taking-off point” than a record. I love to paint, and living in Vermont gives me plenty to paint. I love that I can finish a painting in a day, or spend weeks on a larger one. There is a lot of variety in the art - both in subject and technique.”

Many visitors are struck by the rich colors Deborah achieves with watercolor paints. She uses a very smooth paper (D’Arches Hot Press 140 lb.), which enables her to get very fine detail and intense color. She usually paints many layers of wash - more of an oil technique - and builds up to the finished product.

Deborah lives and paints in the heart of farm country just outside of Middlebury, Vermont. She graduated from Vassar College in 1981 where she studied history, science and fine art. She began painting full-time after teaching art and photography for several years at a boarding school in New Hampshire. Her work can be seen in several galleries throughout Vermont and has been featured in many exhibitions. She welcomes guests to her home gallery in the farmhouse where she lives with her husband and four sons.
