"Only a limited portion of visible light penetrates through water. It reveals a dimly lit monochromatic world tinted mainly with blues and greens, populated with alien residents we can visit only by artificial means. Through my art, I invite the fish into our world to visit with you."

After studying fine arts at SUNY at Stony Brook and The Worcester Museum Art School, Phil Laughlin found himself hard at work on a commercial art career that spanned three decades. After all those years of working on commercial assignments for others, he now uses his studio's resources for his own artistic ends.

As a crossover artist, with one foot in the applied arts and one in the studio arts he is in an ideal position to both promote and benefit from an exchange of ideas. Phil's current body of work deals with the historically established subject of New England game fish. Utilizing his formal drawing skills, he creates a digital equivalent to the centuries old technique of grisaille painting. Equally important to the outcome is the use of the most current color management and printer technology. The result is intriguing and often leaves people guessing how it was done.
