Cindy Sowers
Handmade Dolls

Cindy has been making dolls since she was 11 years old, when she got her first sewing machine. Her background includes
college courses in
design, draping and pattern drafting, working behind the scenes at fashion runway shows, and writing copy for fashion advertising. Cindy also had her own millinery business, designing and making hats, and later delved into fabric collage, making portraits of Native American women, and later portraits of pets, from bits of fabric.
She concentrated her creative efforts on making original dolls in 2000 after starting a family, and does all of the design and construction work herself. “I usually start with a head and the rest of the doll sort of takes on a life of its own and dictates what the finished piece will be. I let the individual doll dictate where it will take me.” Each doll is unique, with her own distinct personality. “I love making dolls! I am able to combine all of the talents and skills I have acquired over the years. I can design, sew, paint, model clay, dye fabric, mess with beads and other embellishment.”
