Churchman, John - Picture.jpg

John Churchman is an artist, photographer and digital illustrator residing in Essex, Vermont with his wife Jennifer and daughter Gabrielle. John is a 1975 graduate of Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia and of Vassar College in 1979 with a year abroad at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He spent the next five years in Manhattan working as a photographer and photographer’s assistant. He also trained as a photo retoucher and airbrush artist prior to the arrival of digital technology. Weekends were spent in his studio in Woodstock, NY painting and creating fine art that has been shown in Manhattan, Vermont and Canada. With the arrival of the digital revolution he applied his talent as an artist, painter and photographer to take his creative work to the next level.

In 1984 after a visit to Vermont, he was so taken by the natural beauty and unique light that he has made this his permanent home. He has this to say about his work:

What inspires me to create imagery is the conditions of light within the image. Each season has it’s own serendipitous beauty and mystery; I strive to bring that into my finished pieces. I believe that first working as a painter and then as a photographer gives me a unique eye for capturing color and light. I have always been very inspired by Franz Marc, Rothko, and Turner, especially Franz Marc’s portrayals of animals in nature.

John’s imagery is currently in galleries in Manhattan, Martha’s Vineyard and New England. In Vermont his work can be seen at the Vermont State Craft Center, Frog Hollow Galleries in Burlington, Manchester and Middlebury.
