Michael, a native born Vermonter, attended local schools in the Mad River Valley and graduated from The University of Vermont in the early nineties with a BA in Studio Art. An initial four year apprenticeship with Vermont glass artist Alan Goldfarb was followed by several gaffing positions at other Vermont studios interspersed with workshops and classes at Pilchuck, Haystack, Penland and The Studio at Corning. These study breaks have included working with some of the best known names in the contemporary glass movement including Gianni Toso, Jack Wax, Lino Tagliapietra and Josiah McElheny.

Michael’s work is currently available at a limited number of Galleries across the country. He also attends a few retail craft shows in the northeast each year such as the Philadelphia Museum of Fine Arts show in November. And, of course, his work is always available at Plush Quartz Art Glass, his home gallery in Granville, Vermont.

“Each piece of glass I create is made of solid glass cane material that I design and produce in my studio. I employ this cane material in my vessels as a painter uses brush strokes, each piece of cane acting as a gesture of color. Working with different styles of cane yields a variety of woven or tapestry surfaces. Combining different canes develops secondary colors and detailed patterns within the walls of my pieces. The results are serendipitous and controlled at the same time. This blending of colors imparts a painterly, watercolor sensibility that I find inherent in the flowing nature of glass. Recently I have also been slumping and fusing cane to explore abstract two dimensional designs and lighting elements. These pieces are the natural evolution of my cane vessels. This work enables me to explore surface design, focusing on composition of color and line, while still working with hot glass.”
