PRINTMAKING Janet Biehl
Printmaker
Using centuries-old intaglio techniques (hard ground etching, soft ground etching, drypoint and aquatint), Biehl works on smooth, mirror-finish copper plates. Combining meticulous detail and gestural shorthand, she celebrates ordinary illuminations with the touch of a human hand, impressing lines onto copper in an act of creation that is also an act of continuity.Janet lives in Burlington, where she captures fleeting moments of sunlight and shadow as they etch our townscape, preserving what Dylan Thomas called “parables of sunlight”, to savor all year round.
In a world of harsh mechanization and rampant commercialism, the ancient practice of making hand-drawn lines reflects the presence of a living, sensing artist. Using centuries-old intaglio techniques (hard ground etching, soft ground etching, dry point and aquatint), she works on smooth, and mirror-finish copper plates. Combining meticulous detail and gesture shorthand, she celebrates ordinary illuminations with the touch of a human hand, impressing lines onto copper in an act of creation that is also an act of continuity.
