Pit-Fired Penguin Sculpture
Each sculpture has been made with a white clay body, carved, and burnished with terra -sigilatta or colored slip. The process begins with pieces being bisque fired to 1800F degrees. After this firing takes place they are pit fired in sawdust and straw which has been soaked in salt. The firing can take from 4 to 24 hours, depending on the type of sawdust and the weather conditions.
