It's become a collaboration. I'll hand-forge a piece in iron and Elise will cut a design in steel and we'll put them together.
Like many Vermont artists, the Junkers find design inspiration from nature. Sometimes a visitor from the woods will initiate a piece, like the time a bear walked through their property and ended up immortalized in a dining table. After meeting at a craft fair, Payne and Elise became a creative team. He encouraged her to try torch-cutting a design in steel, and her folk art designs have been a staple ever since.
