Heather Stearns
![]() | The first time I saw someone using the potter’s wheel, I was drawn by the seemingly effortless dance of moving the clay, the perfect mixture of strength and subtle movements that could grow a lump of earth into a vessel that could be sent into the everyday lives of people. |
Using a warm, rich stoneware clay on the potter’s wheel, Heather strives to produce strong forms that convey an earthy elegance. Many pieces are deeply carved or decorated with layered glazes using wax resists to create patterns. The hope is to blend form and surface in such a way as to suggest boldness and softness, ruggedness and grace all in one piece.
Heather is inspired by patterns in the natural world. The idea of incorporating something of this naturally patterned beauty into pottery destined to be handled by others in an intimate way is compelling to her.
