Bowls and Beyond

A bowl is said to "contain" or "offer". Within the parameters of this curvaceous form students will play with a multitude of considerations including: foot, rim, surface decoration, handles and use. Other forms will be heartily encouraged.

Active Surfaces Workshop
Instructor: Ronan Peterson
This hands-on workshop is premised on the concept of 'more is more', in regards to activating the ceramic surface. Demonstrations will involve throwing utilitarian vessel forms on the wheel, with some discussion and demonstration of altering while the vessel is freshly thrown. Demonstrations will include slips, underglazes, terra sigallattas, as well as carving and texturing techniques to enhance leatherhard and bone dry surfaces. Students will learn glazing techniques, which will include glaze layering, patinas and motivating different surface interactions. Students should have some leatherhard and bisque objects for trying some of the demonstrated techniques. Students will also have a chance to make vessels in the first part of the workshop.

PRINTMAKING
Silk Screen Workshop
Instructor: Timothy Cohalan
Screen Printing is a fun and easy way to make your own cards, posters, even t-shirts. The first half of this day long workshop will be dedicated to an overview of the basics of screen printing, such as how to make a stencil, and how to use drawing fluid and screen filler. There will be a half hour lunch break and then the afternoon will be an opportunity to put theory into practice. Students should come to class with a few simple images or ideas to be turned into stencils. Oil based inks will be used so students should wear painting clothes.

Tuesday Night Silk Screen

Basic Fused Glass

Glass Fusing 2
By working with working with frit, powders, stringers and molds to create a small dish, plate or glass painting students will take their next steps in glass fusion. These elements may also be used to create beautiful jewelry. Teens welcome.

Lampwork Beads
Instructor: Scott Fessler
This four-day class will offer the information, and tools necessary for students to make glass beads on their own. There is an emphasis on safety and knowing ones equipment. Students will be using a “Hot Head” torch to make the beads and will learn basic skills such as winding glass onto a mandrel, decorating glass surfaces, and how to make several bead shapes. Course cost includes the basic tools for making beads so that students will have everything needed to continue making glass beads at home. No experience required.

Nature Photography at Dawn

Learn the techniques, and practices necessary to make photographic records of nature's majesty and fragility in the right place at the right time. Early morning shoots will be followed by presentations of current and historical landscape photography, demonstrations of equipment and technique, and the sharing and critique of student work. Wake up with the sun and see things most people miss! Tripod and DSLR or SLR required. Everyone will shoot slide film or digital. List of recommended and optional equipment will be sent to each participant after registration. Print fee: $18 includes 2 high quality 11x17 prints Optional film fee: (required if not shooting digital): $20 includes 3 rolls of Fuji slide film, payable to instructor.

Street Photography at the Farmer's Market

Get out and learn how to capture the abundance of life and human interaction at Vermont's vibrant Farmer's Markets. Learn how to photograph unobtrusively and from the hip. Get the knack for making relationships with people out in the street and in public. SLR, DSLR, or rangefinder type camera required. Students will be responsible for developing their own work.

Seeing with a Camera - Teen Photography

Learn to use a film or digital SLR camera as a tool for personal expression and visual exploration. Get a complete introduction to technical, aesthetic, and conceptual issues. The class will begin with an activity seeing through the camera followed by an in-depth photo essay. There will be a presentation and discussion of work by 20th century masters as well as today’s cutting-edge leaders. Film camera with full manual controls or DSLR (Digital SLR camera) required. $160 Optional equipment fee for complete manual SLR camera outfit to keep.

Collage Workshop

In this two day class students will learn exciting, innovative ways to apply different traditional and non traditional surface enriching mediums and collage techniques to various supports in order to achieve an organic blend. Once a visual theme is established, students will use a wide range of colored and textured materials including: newspaper imagery, magazines, photocopies, photographs, posters, packing materials, found objects, textiles, beads, sand, etc. Color theory and the elements of design will be discussed. Most of the supplies and tools will be available from the instructor. A list of materials to bring will be available at registration. Limit 10

Free up your drawing! This workshop will focus on the fundamentals of drawing, understanding depth perception, proportion, and the rules of good composition. A goal will be to loosen up and enjoy the activity. Meaningful images often stem from spontaneous and relaxed engagement. Students will work with still life arrangements, the human figure, landscape, and from photos. Attention will be paid to the level of individual students. Teens welcome.

Drawing with Pastels

Learn, practice and explore drawing with soft pastels; one of the most vibrant and flexible drawing tools there is! In this class students will practice a variety of soft pastel techniques while working with different subject matter including still life and photographic references. Mixed Level Silver Jewelry

This course provides the fundamental techniques for the design and creation of hand crafted silver jewelry. Beginning with a simple ring or earrings, students will learn to saw, form, forge, texture, and polish their jewelry. Learn the principles of piercing, filing, soldering, and buffing through weekly demonstrations. Students should come with one or two simple ideas for pieces they would like to make. Silver will be purchased from the instructor. All other tools and materials provided. Teens welcome.

Mask Making Workshop

Learn the 24 movements of Tai-ji simplified version. Tai-ji is one of the most gentle and safe Chinese marshal arts consisting of a combination of movement, breath, and mind work. It is a most popular exercise in China, dating back hundreds of years. Because of its effectiveness and benefits to health, it is still a most popular exercise in China now, and more and more people are trying Tai-ji world wide today. Its slow movement helps balance our fast paced and stressful life style and it’s good for all age groups. Practice daily can benefit one significantly throughout life. Painting on Silk
Instructor: Zosha Peters
This course will give new silk painters the basic instruction of how to paint on silk. Students will have two options as a final end product: a rich and colorful silk scarf, cushion cover, or a piece of fine art that will be ready for dry cleaning, sewing or framing. Students will work with stretchers, silks, brilliant colored dyes and hot wax. Learn what supplies are needed as well as how to set up their painting stations. There will be lectures and demonstrations as needed. Beginning silk painters will learn to control their new and slippery medium. Zosha will bring her own art work for display and literature to review.

Spring Light: Vermont Townscape in Oil

The Vermont landscape as it changes from Spring to Summer is a place of vibrant beauty when the light and colors are at their most exuberant. The townscape around Frog Hollow provides fantastic opportunities to build exciting paintings. In this lively class we'll explore how and why some great paintings succeed, and those lessons will be put to work as students paint intensively around the Frog Hollow facility. Each day, students will work on several canvases reflecting the light around us, concentrating on close observation and the visual dynamics that go into making a painting successful. This class will encourage visual excitement and expansion of perceptual understanding. Students are encouraged to bring their sense of hard work and big fun.
