DANA SCHILDKRAUT

BENNINGTON, VERMONT

Faces are the central theme in Dana’s artworks. With a multitude of expressions, faces provide endless directions to explore. Dana's use of bold and dramatic colors serve to evoke moods, while surreal elements and dreamlike imagery invite the viewer to make meaning. Dana's love of puppetry shows itself, as each sculpture is a unique character. Anthropomorphism in Dana’s art investigates humans' complex and alluring connections to animals. Dana’s favorite sculpting media includes paper, specifically Bristol Board. The unexpected forms made from seemingly fragile paper are compelling. Various clays and paper mache are also utilized. During the pandemic’s months of solitude Dana created many watercolor paintings, which were cut apart and reassembled as collages. To Dana, the building out of a composition in this way feels a bit like sculpting.
